My Past.
I have been fighting to be seen since kindergarten when I and the other Black kids in the class were put in the “C” reading group. Since my math teacher told my parents I was Black and female so they should not expect me to be good at math. Since my guidance counselor asked me about my backup school when he saw the list of colleges I wanted to attend. My experience was about proving adults wrong. Performing above expectations and defying beliefs.
I’ve been a high school English teacher, principal, and principal coach all in NYC all in support of Black girls like me and other minoritized populations that do not feel seen.
My Present.
I am an equity officer in a non-profit organization. I support other equity officers and principals of color through two different collectives and coaching.
I write a lot of articles related to my work.
I wrote a book, Leading Within Systems of Inequity in Education: A Liberation Guide for Leaders of Color, focused on supporting leaders of the global majority (please note: in the US- Asian, Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and people of color may be a smaller percentage but globally-it’s a different story) in school systems. This term was coined by researcher Rosemary M. Campbell-Stephens.
