Video of Competency #10
Written version of Competency #10
Welcome to Leading-Within Wednesdays. Every other Wednesday, I will share a little bit about one of the 10 competencies introduced in the book, Leading Wihin Systems of Inequity in Education: A Liberation Guide for Leaders of Color.
Today, we have come to our LAST competency…
Act to change systemic racism every day.
We have come a long way! We started with self-awareness and are ending with changing the system. There is not an increased level of difficulty in these competencies but I hope it is clear to you by now that they are all interconnected and dependent on each other if we want to see liberated school systems.
This competency is grounded in the story of activist and lawyer Pauli Murray and the 14th Amendment as examples of what level of change we need to be championing in order for systems to change.
As we are in the midst of undoing of system-level protections (Roe v. Wade, Affirmative Action, I could go on..) as a leader of the global majority, it is not the time to tinker around the edges of equity, our actions must end in changing processes or systems otherwise, what are we really doing?
Some reflections questions to help you think about this competency:
What do you need to do on an everyday basis to act through a lens of liberation?
What systems need to be established in your organization to create a liberated school system?
More explanation of this competency, how to practice it, and additional reflection questions and resources are in the final chapter of the book.
In closing…
If you started reading the book, here are a few ways you can spread the word:
Go to Amazon and rate or review the book there! Reviews are a great way for others to see that this book is worth the time to read.
Post about the book on social media using the hashtag #leadingwithin. Even better if it includes a picture of you WITH the book!
Host a book club with your affinity/ERG group. Two study guides are also available on the ASCD website - one for leaders of color and one for white co-conspirators that are perfect to start a group conversation. For book clubs with participants who have purchased and committed to reading the book, please reach out to me so I can support your journey!
Connect with me to speak to your organization or group about topics covered in the book, like ‘practicing love and rage’, ‘building a coalition’, and ‘taking a stand’.
Final Ask!
Take my year one-anniversary survey! It’s only 5 questions.
This concludes our first round of Leading-Within Wednesdays. Where we go from here will be influenced by your feedback so please take the survey but for now we are going to take a break! See you all in September!
Thank YOU so much for all of your support!
If this is your first time reading, please go back and read my Introductions post.
